Jealousy

Updated: May 20

Everyone struggles with jealousy whether we like to admit it or not. It is one of the easiest things to get but the hardest to get rid of. Jealousy gets to the root of the soul. As I struggled jealousy because I face it in my own life I came upon these points! I hope they help you like they did me.

//

Definition: A jealous disposition, attitude, or feeling

Jealous: feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements/advantages

Things That Lead to Jealousy Among the People (especially girls):

  • Other girls bodies

  • Friends are more successful than you when going towards the same accomplishment

  • Perfect life then seeing that others “have” it

  • Relationships

Jealousy is so easy to fall into and it usually stems from counting others blessings instead of our own. You can’t compare your bad day to someones best day. It is one of the greatest weapons that the devil can use to become bigger than it already is.

Jealousy can lead to anger, hurt, destruction, bitterness, etc.

Three False Assumptions with Jealousy:

  1. If she has something, so should I.

  2. If God loves me, He will provide all that I want.

  3. Everything depends on things going my way.

What God Shows Us Through Jealousy:

  1. Himself

    • You are never to bow down to another god because Yahweh, being jealous by nature, is a jealous God. (Exodus 34:14)

    • Jealousy of His bride’s unfaithfulness.

  2. Ourself.

    • Our deepest desires are revealed

    • Brings up things we try to hide.

The Holy Spirit gives you the wisdom and strength to flee from jealousy. Stand in awe of what you do have instead of what you don’t have. (ASK FOR EXAMPLES!) One answer is forgiveness. Grace uncovers all the ugly and dirty parts of your heart including jealousy. Jealousy can feel controlling to where you feel as though you can’t escape then it changes you instantly. Just because God is a jealous God does not mean we get a pass at being jealous. Human jealousy is irrational causing us to lose relationships and ourself and it usually stems from insecurity.

Three Gospels Truths to Stop Jealousy:

  1. I need nothing other than what Christ has given me. (His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4)

  2. God does love me. (This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers. 1 John 3:16)

  3. My happiness, satisfaction, peace, serenity, and obedience directly depend on whether or not I place my hope in Christ. (We have also received an inheritance[a] in Him, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will, so that we who had already put our hope in the Messiah might bring praise to His glory. Ephesians 1:11-12)

What Does the Bible Say About Jealousy:

  • The tenth commandment instructs us to not be jealous. Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. (Exodus 20:17)

  • Jealousy destroys your inner being and consumes your goodness. A tranquil heart is life to the body, but jealousy is rottenness to the bones. (Proverbs 14:30)

  • Wise people don’t want to be with jealous people. Let us walk with decency, as in the daylight: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy. (Romans 13:13)

  • Jealousy is worse than anger. Fury is cruel, and anger a flood, but who can withstand jealousy? (Proverbs 27:4)

The Challenge. Who is wise and has understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who cultivate peace. (James 3:13-18)
